Bali Tip #1: Banana Pancakes

One of the most popular breakfast options at a Balinese homestay is the Banana pancake. Being American, I expected to be served a small stack (read: two or more) buttermilk pancakes with chunks of banana mixed into them, and syrup on the side.

That is not what a Balinese banana pancake is...at all.

It's much closer to a crepe shell, filled with an eggy, flan-like batter on the face side. There are slices of banana placed delicately in the flan batter. Sometimes the pancake yellow, sometimes its green. Sometimes there are chunks of local pineapple and banana. And sometimes, it comes smothered in loose, syrupy honey.

Its delicious and I loved it, but the first time I ordered it (and yes, by "it" I mean I got just one pancake), I was quite surprised. Give it a try when you go, but don't expect it to fill you up, even with a nice serving of fragrant Lombok coffee to wash it down.
